REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

In the process of removing the engine, you will come across a number of steps which call for the removal of a separate component or system, such as "disconnect the exhaust system" or "remove the radiator." In most instances, a detailed removal procedure can be found elsewhere in this manual.

It is virtually impossible to list each individual wire and hose which must be disconnected, simply because so many different model and engine combinations have been manufactured. Careful observation and common sense are the best possible approaches to any repair procedure.

Removal and installation of the engine can be made easier if you follow these basic points:

  1. Remove the valve covers, and either remove the rocker arm shafts or loosen the rockers on their pivots and remove the pushrods. The pushrods must be reinstalled in their original positions.
  2. Remove the timing gear cover.
  3. Remove the valve lifters in sequence with a magnet. They must be replaced in their original positions.
  4. Rotate the crankshaft to align the camshaft sprocket timing marks.
  5. Remove the camshaft thrust plate retaining bolts.
  6. Remove the camshaft sprocket, thrust plate and camshaft as an assembly from the engine.

To install:

  1. Inspect the camshaft as described in this section.
  2. liberally coat the camshaft with oil before installing it. Slide the camshaft with the thrust plate and sprocket attached into the engine very carefully so as not to scratch the bearing bores with the camshaft lobes.
  3. Tighten the camshaft thrust plate retaining bolts to 9-12 ft. lbs. (12-16 Nm). Measure the camshaft end-play. If the end-play is more than 0.009 in. (0.228mm), replace the thrust plate.
  4. Install the valve lifters. They must be replaced in their original positions.
  5. Install the timing gear cover.
  6. Install the pushrods, the rocker arms and the rocker arm covers.
  7. Install the engine.

Using solvent, degrease the camshaft and clean out all of the oil holes. Visually inspect the cam lobes and bearing journals for excessive wear. If a lobe is questionable, check all of the lobes as indicated. If a journal or lobe is worn, the camshaft MUST BE or replaced.

If a journal is worn, there is a good chance that the bearings or journals are worn and need replacement.

If the lobes and journals appear intact, place the front and rear journals in V-blocks and rest a dial indicator on the center journal. Rotate the camshaft to check the straightness. If deviation exceeds 0.001 in. (0.0254mm), replace the camshaft.

Check the camshaft lobes with a micrometer, by measuring the lobes from the nose to the base and again at 90° (see illustration). The lobe lift is determined by subtracting the second measurement from the first. If all of the exhaust and intake lobes are not identical, the camshaft must be reground or replace.
